Appetizing Cruises Taste so Good!

Friday in the Caribbean Jim house is called "Sushi Friday". My family (even the kids!) loves to try all kinds of foods. But apparently we’re not alone—Gourmet Cruises are now the hottest thing since wasabi!

"What'a a gourmet cruise?" you ask? Well, the days of first or second seating have been replaced on these culinary creations with dining that would make a celebrity chef ask for more! It's not as much where you cruise to as what you can eat on these delectable departures, and the good news is you have a wide variety of both destinations and dishes. Some of the leading cruise liners that conduct Gourmet Cruises are Crystal Cruises , Cunard Cruises , Oceania Cruises , Celebrity Cruises , Regent Seven Sea Cruises , Seabourn Cruise Lines , and Silversea Cruises to name a few.

Since it's sushi friday, I would check out Celebrity chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa (from Nobu and Nobu57 fame in Manhattan and Vegas), who has a restaurant and sushi bar on Crystal Cruises Crystal Symphony. He opens it during a gourmet cruise from Hong Kong to Beijing, and he also hosts a traditional Japanese sake ceremony for guests on board. If Nobu isn't nearby, not to worry. Wolfgang Puck is featured in the Jade Garden restaurant, with exotic Asian dishes inspired by Puck's acclaimed Chinois Restaurant. Don't forget while on board to try the elegant Crystal Dining Room, featuring classical French Cuisine. The extensive wine cellar is stocked with over 150 different selections and 20,000 bottles. Oiu Oiu ! If the Symphony isn't your speed, try the Silk Road and Sushi Bar, modelled on Nobu's restaurants, which has been hugely successful on the Symphony’s sister ship the Crystal Serenity. CJim FYI: Book the 12 night voyage as it has a 3 night stopover in Beijing.

Todd English knows a thing or two about good grub. In fact, he now has 19 restaurants including Bluezoo at the Disney World Dolphin Resort, and Olives, with locations in the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, the St. Regis Hotel in Aspen, Colo., and the W Hotel at Union Square in New York City among others. Cunard's Queen Victoria features his cuisine, and has a restaurant with his name on it. Speaking of the Queen, Todd met her while visiting Britain 4 years ago. "She's very cute," English recalled of his meeting with the queen. "She's a nice little old lady. When we met, she said, 'Oh Todd English! I like your name.'" Any you will like his food, which can also be found on the Queen Mary 2.

For Chocolate lovers, the Regent Seven Seas Voyager has a December 1 sailing from Ft. Lauderdale. Chef Serge Decrauzat of the Valrhona chocolate company is onboard to demonstrate all types of chocolate creations. Chocolate experts will also lecture on the history and healthful (yes!) properties of this delightful confection. Stopping in Key West, Cozumel, Belize City, Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala, and Costa Maya, Mexico, I highly recommend a margarita with your chocolate!

Keep in mind you don't have to do a speciality gourmet cruise to have great food, either. Costa Cruises is an Italian based company from Genoa. No wonder the kitchen uses up to 50 types of pasta, and the wine lists are chosen by the Italian Sommeliers’ Association. I knew I picked a bad day to start my low carb diet!

So if you're fascinated by celebrity chefs like Marco Pierre White, Nobu, James Martin, Aldo Zilli and Gary Rhodes - and think you haven't a prayer of getting a seat (much less affording the meal) at one of their posh food palaces, remember -celebrity chefs are increasingly teaming up with cruise lines to create at-sea eateries. And while exclusive, these onboard restaurants are a terrific way to enjoy the star chef experience at a relatively reasonable cost. Well, once you've paid for the cruise, that is. No matter what your taste, gourmet cruising is a red hot trend so book ahead before your table is taken :)

Many small luxury river cruises also have naturalists, historians and other experts onboard to educate and entertain cruisers. They offer informal lectures, lead expeditions and answer questions. Completely narrated excursions and sightseeing are generally a part of the price of the cruise. Luxury cabins of the cruise feature historic decor and luxurious appointments, thus offering comfort and convenience to those cruisers who wish to travel around important and historical sites. Many of the small luxury river cruises have single-seating dining and nightly entertainment in elegant showrooms
