Are you an Arenophile?
No, it's not the love of arenas or something to ask your doctor about. It's people who collect sand as a hobby...something my BlackBerry and laptop do on a daily basis when I'm at the beach! But before you start planning a trip to study the stuff people fly thousands of miles to see everyday, knowing which beach is right for you can make your search for the perfect, affordable vacation that much better!
If it's powdery, white sand with incredible water color you want, the best beach I've graced is Grace Bay Beach on Providenciales, Turks & Caicos. You can walk for an hour and still not run out of room while exploring the 12 miles of unbelievable scenery. With 30+ restaurants and bars to choose from directly on the beach, you won't go hungry or thirsty on your walk either! CJ Tip: Stay at the Comfort Suites just across the street from the beach and spend the savings at the nearby Danny Buoy's Irish Pub!
Several runner ups to Provo's Grace Bay are worth a sand castle or two as well! Anguilla's Rendezvous Bay is where I saw Jimmy Buffett play at Bankie Banx's Dune Preserve bar last year, and from what I can remember it was awesome :) with great views of St. Maarten/St. Martin (it's a half Dutch, half French island so the spelling is different depending on which side of the island you are on). Speaking of SXM (the airport code for St. Maarten/St. Martin), you will want to see Orient Beach on the western end of the island. Be aware you may see too much, though, depending on your taste because the south end is a naturalist area (full nudity allowed). If you are gazing at the water and not those around you, you will see St. Barth's in the distance. The beach at the Eden Rock Hotel on St. Jean is a sight to behold, and very kid friendly since the reefs not far offshore protect the inlet from waves and rough waters. CJ Tip: Stay 9 nights on a Friday to the following Sunday, flying into SXM and spending at least 1 night each on the neighboring Anguilla and St. Barth's.
Note if you are on SXM and looking for some non beach adventure, you can take a 10 minute flight to both Saba (pronounced Say-ba) or Sint Eustasius (Statia as it's known). Saba has just one road to explore the island on...it's aptly named "The Road", and is home to just over 1000 resident. Statia has 2 volcanoes and a mini-rainforest to take in as well.
I've got so many more great beaches to tell you about, and the good news is this is just part 1 of a 12 part series on finding the right beach for you! So keep coming back to my blog in the days ahead, and look forward to seeing you on the beach soon!
